Mosquitos- A threat to all

Almost everyone in the world has experienced the bite of a mosquito. Most kinds of mosquitoes are not dangerous at all but some kinds of mosquitoes spread viruses that can cause disease, for a relief house mosquitos are not dangerous and so is their bite.

For most viruses spread by mosquitoes, there is no vaccines or medicines available in the market. Although some pharma companies claim medicines that can cure the MBD's (mosquito-borne diseases) but these are under research and are not proven yet of their effectiveness.

Mosquitoes commonly bite during the day and night, and they live inside and outside our home, and usually search for warm places as temperatures begin to drop.

Some mosquitos hibernate in enclosed spaces, like garages, sheds, and under (or inside) homes, to survive cold temperatures.

Mosquito-borne diseases- are they really dangerous:

1). According to the study by the World Health Organization mosquitoes infect over 300 million people every year with the disease such as as..Malaria and Dengue, only two of the life-threatening diseases that mosquitoes carry.

2). According to the study of the world health organization, of those 300 million people 80 million dies from Malaria and another 20 thousand from Dengue.

3). According to the CDC, in the United States of America alone since the year 2001 over 30 thousand people have been infected with West Nile Virus, and Of those 30 thousand infections over 1,200 have resulted in death.

4). According to the study of the Directorate of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) in India, till the month of July 30, 2016, the total number of dengue cases in the country were 16,870 while they increased exponentially in  2017 with 28,702 cases.

5). According to data reported to ArboNet, US states rendered 452 symptomatic Zika virus disease cases, out of 437 cases were of travelers returning from affected areas.

What type of diseases mosquito spread:

The diseases spread by mosquitos are quite dangerous, and there's no proper medication for MBD's(mosquito-borne diseases).

3 most dangerous diseases come from mosquitoes:

Malaria is till now the most dangerous and vastly spread virus carried by mosquitoes.

The World Health Organisation(WHO) estimates that 438,000 people died of malaria in 2015, and the majority of them were young children in Africa. On the other hand, malaria isn't a major concern in western countries like Canada, it's considered to be a major concern for travelers visiting Africa and South Asia.

India is one of the 15 countries in the world to have the highest number of cases of deaths from malaria, The World Health Organisation(WHO) World Malaria Report revealed in 2017.

Globally, 2016 saw a preposterous number of 216 million cases and 445,000 deaths, as compared to 2015’s 211 million cases and 4,46,000 deaths.

Symptoms Of Malaria:

Fever is a major symptom of malaria, and it comes with shaking chills, aching of muscles, tiredness, headaches, and nausea. Symptoms start to act within 10-28 days of being bitten by a malaria-carrying mosquito.

Due to the loss of red blood cells, a malaria infection can result in kidney failure, coma, or death if not treated immediately.

Possible Medication for malaria:

Malaria pills are not 100% effective in preventing or restraining the disease.
The pills must be used with other preventive measures, such as using insect repellant, wearing long sleeves, and protecting the sleeping area with a net.

Dengue is a virus carried by mosquitoes, Most cases of dengue occurs in tropical areas of the world, with the highest amount of risk occurring in:

India, Southeast Asia, South of China, Taiwan, Africa

According to the study of the Directorate of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) in India, till the month of July 30, 2016, the total number of dengue cases in the country were 16,870 while they increased exponentially in  2017 with 28,702 cases.

According to the study of the world health organization, of those 300 million people, 20 thousand dies of Dengue.

Symptoms Of Malaria:

Symptoms, which usually start showing up within four to six days after infection and stays up to 10 days. Sudden high fever, Severe headaches, joint and muscle pain, Stress, Vomiting, Skin rash(which appears two to five days after the onset of fever).

Possible Medication for malaria:

People who are suffering from dengue fever have no substantial risk of death but some of them develop. Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF), In some of these cases, death can occur.

If a clinical diagnosis is made early, proper health care can effectively treat DHF using fluid replacement therapy. Usually, treatment of DHF generally requires hospitalization.

3.Zika virus:

Probably the most recent disease of mosquito-borne diseases right now is the Zika virus, because of its outbreak in Brazil. The virus comes with Zika fever, an illness which carries little to no symptoms. Zika is spread by the "Aedes mosquito" and can also be sexually transmitted by a man.

Three people, including a pregnant woman, were found of infected with mosquito-borne Zika virus in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad. The cases were picked up during random monitoring and surveillance at the BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, the World Health Organization (WHO) has claimed.

Symptoms of Zika virus:

Symptoms are generally mild and include fever, rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise or a headache. Symptoms typically last for 2–7 days. Most people with Zika virus infection do not develop symptoms.

Possible Medication:

There is no treatment available for Zika virus infection. Symptoms of Zika virus infection are usually mild. Should get an ample amount of rest, drink lots of fluids, and treat pain and fever with common medicines. If symptoms worsen, they should meet medical care for advice.

Prevention from mosquitoes borne diseases:

People should take as many precautions as possible to protect themselves from being bitten by mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes can Bite at any time. Many types of mosquitoes bite between dusk and dawn, but some of them are more active during the daytime, such as those that transmit diseases like the Zika virus. Mosquitoes like– the Aedes aegypti – also transmits dengue and chikungunya virus.

There are a number of things one can do to avoid from being bitten by mosquitoes.

1. Wear Protective Clothing= long sleeves and long pants in light colors are best because mosquitoes are attracted to darker colors.

2. Treatment of clothes with permethrin solution= Treat your clothes and mosquito nets with an insect repellent containing permethrin(Permethrin, sold under the brand name {ELICE, in india}, among others, is a medication and insecticide.

As a medication, it is used to treat scabies and lice. It is applied to the outer skin as a cream or lotion. among others, is a medication and insecticide). Permethrin paralyzes and kills mosquitoes if they eat or touch it.

Spray permethrin on your everyday clothes and mosquito nets or soak clothes and bed nets in permethrin wash. Be careful not to let the permethrin touch your eyes and mouth.

3. Use insect repellents= While going out, one should use insect repellents containing DEET(preferably more than 21%). DEET doesn't kill mosquitoes else it paralyzes their olfactory nerve(power to smell) and confuses them so it stops them from biting any person.

Repellents must be used on the exposed areas of the skin, where there chance of being bitten by mosquitoes. But be careful while using as these must be in touch with mouth and eyes.

4. Use mosquito net= While sleeping mosquito net is must, the net forms a covering around the body which restricts the reach of mosquitoes to our body. A good sleep ensures a magnificent start of the next day.

5. Mosquito coils= Many companies manufacture mosquito coils which are very well capable of protecting us from mosquitoes. The smell exhibited by the burning coil make mosquitoes nauseated and force them to get out of the room.

Mind that the smell of these coils is also not very good for human being, so the use of this coil must be limited. and always keep in mind to keep these away from children as these are poisonous.

6. Mosquito repellant machines= Mosquitoes machines are plug-in machines which release a mild smell which makes mosquitoes nauseated and forces them to leave the room. These machines cost around 100rs. and are very safe mosquito repellant device with no effects on humans.

7. Stay in cooler places= Mosquitoes can't live in cooler places as they are cold-blooded animals and need a warmer place to survive. Prefer air conditioners in summer for protection from mosquitoes.

8. Change of lifestyle= Many people have the habit of living in dirt, not properly cleaning house, accumulating garbage for a longer period, wasteful storage of water(stagnant water) are some places considered to be heaven for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes live in dirty places and they always prefer a warmer place to survive.

So changing way of living can cause a drastic reduction in MBDs(mosquitoes borne diseases).

Mosquitoes are everywhere and we can't completely protect ourself from mosquitoes, but a little knowledge about the diseases and a little precaution could protect us from mosquitoes to some extent. The most important thing is to protect children (under age 15) from the reach of mosquitoes, as children under age 15 have a weak immune system which makes them easy to get exposed to MBD's(mosquitoes borne diseases.

Measures of Precaution from mosquitoes starts from our home itself. One should never store water here and there which creates a place of growth for mosquitoes. One should clean their premises every week properly and should not accumulate garbage.

Preventing these little steps might get mosquitoes out of your house. And can save millions of lives.
