Radiations-playing with our mind

What is Radiation:

In physics, radiation is the discharge or transfer of energy in the form of waves or particles through space or through a material medium.

Radiation is very often categorized as either ionizing or non-ionizing depending upon the energy of the radiated particles.

Smartphones And Radiations:

As we are all aware of our present condition, how smartphones are capturing our life. Though cell phones nowadays are an essential part of our lives and we can't imagine our life without it. Smartphones are capable of performing multiple tasks and making our life easier.

But with such comfort in our life, there's a hidden truth struck behind it. Smartphones emit radiofrequency energy waves, a form of non-ionizing radiation, from their antennas. Tissues nearest to the antenna can absorb this energy which could affect the body negatively.

How radiation affects your life:

The magnitude of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation ranges from 30 kilohertz to 300 gigahertz.  Electromagnetic fields in this radiofrequency range are often used for telecommunications applications, including cell phones, televisions, and radio transmissions.

The living human body absorbs energy from such devices that certainly emits radiofrequency electromagnetic radiations. The quantity of the absorbed energy by the human body is estimated, using a measure called the specific absorption rate (SAR).

Exposure to ionizing radiations, such as from the x-rays, is very well known to increase the risk of cancer. Although a lot of studies have examined the potential health effects of non-ionizing radiation from radar, microwave ovens, cell phones, and other sources, there is currently no potential evidence that non-ionizing radiation increases the risk of cancer.

It has been suggested that radiofrequency energy might affect glucose metabolism, but some studies examined brain glucose metabolism after use of a cell phone showed conflicting results. Whereas one study showed an increase in glucose metabolism in the region of the brain close to the antenna compared with the tissues on the opposite side of the brain.

Does Radiation causes diseases:

Constant use of cell phones could be dangerous for our health but there's very less probability to that. Although Children who spend half of their time on phones have a higher risk of getting prone to these radiations which causes devastating degradation to their mental health. It is adviced for children not to use phones for a long time. Pregnant women also are adviced not to use cell phones a lot because that might affect the health of the baby. Here are some studies were done by scientists worldwide:

1). Cancer:

There is no strong or consistent evidence that constant use of mobile phones increases the risk of getting brain cancer or other head tumors. The United States National Cancer Institute pointed out that "Radiofrequency energy, does not cause DNA damage that can lead to cancer. It's only significantly observed any biological effect in humans is tissue heating and that's all.

In 2011 a World Health Organization(WHO) classified smartphone to use as "potential to cause cancer to humans". The Center for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) said in his report that no scientific evidence surely answers whether cell phone use causes cancer.

2). Male fertility:

A constant decline in male sperm quality has been observed over several decades. Studies performed on the impact of mobile radiation on male fertility are inconsistent, and the effects of the radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation emitted by these devices on the reproductive systems are currently under active debate.

A 2012 review concluded that "together, the results of these studies have shown that radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation decreases sperm count and increases oxidative stress(imbalance between reactive oxygen species and a biological system ability to readily repair the resulting damage).

3). Tissues Damage:

Professor Croft and his team found mobile phone radiation exposure to a limit increases the temperature of the outer grey, wrinkled layer of the brain known as the "cortex". But it's approximately about 0.1-0.3 degree, which is very much minute compared to the temperature variation the body normally has to face ''.

How to save yourself from these radiations:

There might be a slight chance that we may get affected by these cell phone radiations. And it might be life-threating also(very less probability), Still, we should restrict ourself from spending valuable part of our life on smartphones. To be on a safe side one could use simple tricks to pretend us from getting affected by these radiations.

1. Don’t allow children below age 15 to use a cell phone for calling:

This is very much important for parents. Children should only use a cell phone casually for 1-2 hours a day or in case of emergencies only.

2. Avoid carrying your cell phone directly on your body:

Even on standby mode, your cell phone communicates at their full power with the nearest cell phone tower regularly to ensure that it has the best signal possible even when your cell phone is turned off it may still be emitting radiation to a very small extent.

Many cell phones have GPS interpolated which periodically transmits radiofrequency waves to update their position, even when switched off. Flight mode or airplane mode is a safer alternative, but better to avoid carrying your phone on your body all the time.

3. Don’t use your telephone when in a moving vehicle:

This might be on a bus, train, car etc. According to Lloyd Morgan of the Environmental Health Trust: In a moving vehicle the cell phone antenna is constantly scanning for contact and therefore operating at increased signal strength, hence radiation emissions are increased than regular use.

4. Never sleep with a cell phone switched on at night beside your bed:

Never even bring the cell phone near your body while sleeping.

5. Use airplane mode:

Most people don’t know this, but many phones have a function that allows their cellphones to be used on airplanes. Because airplane mode cuts off all wireless transmissions from your cell phone, it also stops all risk of cellphone radiation too. So if you’re not using your phone for a longer period of time, then either switch it off or enable the airplane mode.

6. Don’t make the mistake of thinking a low SAR cell phone is a safe cell phone:

Specific Absorption Rate(SAR) which is a measure of microwave radiation absorbed by human body tissue from using a cell phone. Its good to know what the SAR value of your cell phone is, but do not make the mistake of assuming that a low SAR value cell phone is a safe cell phone. A “high SAR phone” can be very efficient and normally work at low power, whereas a “low SAR phone” can be inefficient and normally have to work at high power

7. Prefer text messaging to making calls with your cell phone:

Texting also exposes your body to the radiation but it's a very minute exposure. Still hold your cell phone away from your body when you press ‘send’.

We are living in the 21st century and its impossible to shut down our mobile phones. Our whole life is dependent on mobile phones. Mobile phones surely have made our easier and comfortable, but with every good thing comes the worst part and so is with mobile phones. So, don't stop entirely stop using cell phones either use it wisely.
